Scott Pilgrim Versus The World

2010
This kind of animation overlaps the whole movie.

Verdict: I never thought I'd say this, but: a movie that's better than the books. Inconceivable!

It's only better because the movie takes place in a perpetual fast-forward that mimics the style of the comic book and makes everything funnier than usual. And they exaggerated the video game references to the max.

As a side effect, there are a couple scenes toward the beginning that I didn't like because they skipped past some funny moments far too quickly for the gags to sink in. And some non-joke scenes as well. I guess one advantage of books is that you can linger on any moment as long as you like.

But overall, the movie is awesome for its pacing and humor, and it conveys its message(s) just as well as the book, or maybe even better. And the moral of the story is about being a better person, somehow without being sappy in any way, if you can believe it.

If you read the books, it is also rather satisfying that most of the characters were cast extremely accurately.

Another reason I like the movie more than the books is that there's a "rock band battle" near the beginning of the books that has a certain gusto about it, but this doesn't re-occur later when it feels like it should. The movie fixes that!

It's fun, it's funny, it's not boring or stupid (as long as you can keep up with the pace), and it actually has a human message in there somewhere. Go Fig.
